What is the basis for parental discipline?

Q: We are new parents, and both grew up in households where disciplinary action was part of daily living. It wasn’t abuse, but correction. But we don’t want our kids to live with a list of rules. Our parents have told us we’ll live to regret setting discipline aside. What is the basis for parental discipline? – P.P.

A: Just as a child needs correcting, so God’s children need correcting. The Scripture says, “‘My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.’ Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? … No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it” (Hebrews 12:5–7, 11, NIV).

Imagine if we all ignored traffic laws. We might deserve a ticket or even arrest! What good parent should withhold guidance and discipline? We are to train our children in the way in which they should go. If we neglect these responsibilities, we will suffer the consequences – perhaps not immediately, but later on.

We must discipline ourselves to stay close to the Lord, and we must teach our children to honor their parents, for this is a command from God. He alone is our security, and we are to count it all joy knowing that God cares enough to correct us according to His wisdom and love.

Parenting is the most important responsibility most of us will ever face, and none of us does it perfectly. Pray for the Lord’s wisdom as you exhibit tough love and merciful love.
