Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday announced a new state effort to aid Californians rebuild after wildfires and other disasters.

The Disaster Rebuilding Assistance Program aims to make it easier for homeowners to secure construction and renovation loans by offering perks to lenders, such as reimbursement opportunities and coverage on losses.

The recent state budget set aside $100 million for the effort that was developed in response to the catastrophic wildfires that swept through swaths of Los Angeles in early 2025. But other people across the state who have their homes damaged or destroyed by disasters are also eligible for support, so it could also become a lifeline for people in Northern California.

People are generally eligible if they plan to rebuild a single-family home and meet certain loan types and income limits, which vary by county.

Difficulties rebuilding after a disaster are a common and frustrating reality for many survivors, and Newsom said the program will turbocharge “efforts to help families get back home and communities rebuild faster.”
